Introducing Liquidware FlexApp and FlexApp One

What’s up, everyone!

Welcome to my mini-series about Liquidware ProfileUnity and FlexApp. Previously I have explored how to setup ProfileUnity and how to manage profiles for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 Cloud PCs.

Join me in this post as I explore Liquidware FlexApp and FlexApp One. Let’s find out why FlexApp is a great way to manage and deliver applications to your devices.

The series:

I want to send a big thank you to my friends at Liquidware for allowing me to set up a demo environment!

Enjoy!

Introducing Liquidware FlexApp

Liquidware FlexApp is an application layering solution which simplifies the management of delivering apps to various workspaces. Using a solution like FlexApp has a lot of benefits as an admin or even as an end user:

  • Admins have the option to deliver apps during boot, user logon or on-demand when the end user clicks the icon.
  • FlexApps do not install directly in the operating system. Instead applications are packaged into containers. Using containers, simple management tasks like removing the app or updating the app does not leave any orphaned files or registry keys behind (also called winrot).
  • Instead IT admins can package the newer version and simply swap the FlexApp which benefits the admin and user experience during the life cycle management process. There is almost no delay in this process which improves greatly the end user  experience.
  • FlexApps are compatible with many workspaces, meaning you can use FlexApp on Microsoft platforms like Windows 11/10, Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop or even other solutions from Citrix, Omnissa and even Amazon Workspaces.
  • FlexApp is a great solution to manage apps on VDI environments. Chances are that you can reduce in the amount of golden images since FlexApps are delivered outside of the golden image. This reduces complexity and time for IT departments to manage golden images.
  • FlexApp packages use some form of isolation to improve application compatibility.
  • FlexApp does not require the use of silent installers.

Liquidware has integrated their FlexApp solution with the ProfileUnity console, in fact the solution is called ProfileUnity with FlexApp. As an IT admin, you have the ability to enable context-awareness while delivering apps to their devices and use advanced management like;

  • using app privilege elevation.
  • modifying the registry after an app is packaged.
  • an inventory of the FlexApps that are being used.

One thing to keep in mind is that your device needs to be online for the solution to work. If this is not the case, then you need to enable full caching. You could also use FlexApp One. Let’s find out more below!

Introducing FlexApp One

Think of FlexApp One as an extension of FlexApp that you can use to deploy FlexApp containers without being required to install the FlexApp runtime on the device or being dependent of the management console. With FlexApp One you can package one or more apps to a single executable file. This file contains the FlexApp runtime and the packaged app(s). As an additional bonus users can be authenticated before access is granted to the app(s). Just like FlexApp, these apps are not installed on the local machine.

Since FlexApp One does not require the runtime to be installed on the device, it makes for a great solution to deploy apps using Microsoft Intune, Microsoft’s new App Attach, MECM or go old skool with a USB drive. Here is an overview when to use FlexApp or FlexApp One:

FlexApp partner solutions

On thing that I really wanted to highlight are the partner solutions for FlexApp out there.

Nerdio Manager is a great way to manage virtual desktops in AVD, Windows 365 Cloud PCs and physical Windows 10/11 devices. With Nerdio Manager you can deliver FlexApp One apps to your managed desktops.

Rimo3 allows companies to test application compatibility against various scenarios like AVD (multi-session and single session) or specific Windows builds. It also packages applications so they can be used with Microsoft Intune or modernize them into MSIX, App Volumes or FlexApp One.

10ZiG is known for their modern zero and thin clients as well as their repurposing software. They have partnered up with Liquidware and with FlexDirect it’s possible to deliver FlexApps to 10ZiG’s Win11 IoT thin clients.

And last but definitely not least, Microsoft! I recently learned at Nerdiocon that Liquidware is a launching partner of the Microsoft App Attach program. This allows IT admins to deliver FlexApp One apps to your Azure Virtual Desktop host pools.
